I had a great time getting to know Rio. Much of that is due to our guide, Christina, born and raised in Rio. She not only showed us around, she brought Rio to life. Yes, there are more than 6 million people in the city – so we saw plenty of life there – but there’s only so much you can get from simply observing. The rest comes from being with someone who has a passion for sharing her love of the city and the Cariocas (inhabitants of Rio) who live there. Paolo was our driver, and although he did not seem to speak too much English, he was great. He gave me a few scares on the narrow, winding streets, though. Except in the downtown area, there are not stop lights. He would just honk and keep going.
