Take the picture, Donna.

Saturday:

Yesterday there were birds flying alongside the ship, keeping pace with us most of the morning. I saw them at breakfast out the window on deck 12. I could have reached out and touched them. White with black on the back edges of their wings and tails. I wondered at them being so far from land. Did I have my camera with me? Of course not. So today I determined to carry my larger camera to breakfast in the hopes they would be there again. Did I see them? Of course not. And to make my disappointment complete, I heard from other passengers the birds were actually swooping down to the water to catch flying fish that had been stirred up by the ship. I would have loved to see that!

Lessons learned: carry your camera at all times, and don’t assume a Kodak moment will repeat itself.

Since I had my camera with me today, I was ready when the musicians serenaded passengers on their way into dinner. Nice guys from the Philippines with a wide ranging repertoire. I do have to say, though, that standing there in their dark suits, instruments in hand, I keep half expecting them to break out in mariachi music. They are actually in the same spot every evening, but I’ve learned my lesson and didn’t delay snapping their picture.
