OK, I know you were as anxious as I was to find out what kind of birds I saw flying alongside the ship two days ago. Yes, the ones I did NOT photograph. I attended a lecture today by a marine biologist. His real topic was whale songs, but he first spent a few minutes walking us through his scientific reasoning in determining what kind of birds they were. It’s all in the markings. Masked Boobies. Yep, Boobies, as in more than one Masked Booby. No snickering. This is science. His subsequent talk on whale songs and echolocation was actually very interesting.

This afternoon, the Virtuoso group enjoyed a semi-private concert by the onboard guest pianist. He plays very very well. I sat in a spot where I could not see much of him, but that was ok since, as a piano student in college and music teacher for many years, I’ve seen plenty of pianists perform. While we all enjoyed Moon River, Bach, Liszt, Beethoven and Chopin, I looked around the room and spotted a funny trio of art pieces on one wall. One really caught my eye since it had a fish on a plate. Made me think of all the fish I’ve had on this trip, including flying fish in Barbados. Still don’t love fish, but I can take it in small doses. I did have a fishy surprise at dinner one night on deck 12 in the more casual restaurant called Tastes. There were breadsticks and what I thought was some kind of herby-garlicy butter in a little dish. I spread a little on the end of a breadstick, took a bite, and the fishy taste just about knocked me out of my chair. Tonight I finally asked what that stuff is. It’s a blend of tuna and salmon.
It is no secret I am not a morning person. We’ve been told to go top-side at 6:30a tomorrow morning to experience sailing into Rio. “Seasoned sailors and experiences cruisers agree that sailing into Rio de Janeiro is an unforgettable experience.” For this once in a lifetime opportunity, I will get up. And I’ll have my camera ready.
